Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy (Xbox Series X) – Review

Welcome to the world of Amerzone—The Explorer’s Legacy, a stunning 2025 remake of the classic adventure game that captivated players with its rich storytelling and immersive landscapes in 1999. This reimagined version brings a fresh visual and technical overhaul to the beloved journey, blending modern graphics and improved gameplay mechanics with a timeless narrative.

You step into the shoes of a fearless journalist, following in the steps of an explorer as you traverse the mysterious land and uncover its secrets. You need to solve puzzles and immerse yourself in the world of Amerzone. The remake stays true to the original spirit while enhancing the experience and making some changes, so it’s not too easy for people who have played the game before.

This is one of those games where you sit down and get completely immersed in what it has to offer. I loved the puzzles; they’re clever and engaging and make you think without being super overwhelming.

I loved the built-in support system in the journal, which gives you those handy little hints if you get a little stuck, but it’s enough of a hint to get you further without giving you the answer, which was great as it did not take away from those “aha!” moments when you figure the puzzle out.

I enjoyed the controls and how different they felt in this game. It stood out as a select and travel-type experience compared to free movement, like 99% of games today. You had to use the joystick to carefully move around and uncover points of interest that could help with the investigation.

I found myself pressing “Y” more than I probably should have, which would highlight key points of interest for you to check out to help you move further into the game. The developers kept the game true to the original with the movement, which is refreshing.

I was surprised by how simplistic the sound design in this game was, and it worked well for the style of the game and the atmosphere. I was impressed with the voice acting and how real it all sounded, like you could hear the emotion in the voices.

This was a great little change from the new run of developers using AI voices in games and added a new depth to the story. Sometimes, the sounds were non-existent, which was not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s a stunning game; the lighting and attention to detail in the graphics were next-level compared to the original, and it’s quite clear it’s been smashed right out of the park. Because the movement in the game was a little slower, the developers could spend time making each scene and moment beautiful, building environments with so much depth and atmosphere, and the textures finished off the experience. It made following the already great storyline much more enjoyable because you’re not just playing through events but exploring a visually captivating world.

Amerzone—The Explorer’s Legacy is a visually stunning masterpiece that blends a beautifully crafted world with a genuinely engaging storyline. Despite being a remake, it retains an original and unique feel that sets it apart from modern titles. The game does a fantastic job of immersing you in its mysterious atmosphere, with puzzles that challenge your thinking and moments that have you scratching your head.
