Grandma, No! (Steam) – Preview

Thanks to developer Wallride and publisher Super Rare Originals, I was allowed to play their demo of ‘Grandma No!’ Unfortunately, I will have little to tell you as the demo only lasted about 15 minutes. Even after a second play-through, there wasn’t much more to find and interact with. Anyway, read on, and I will at least tell you about my short experience.

Grandma No! has you playing as Grandma who gets unceremoniously burdened with babysitting her grandchild. With such a short demo and little interaction with your grandchild, I would be hard-pressed to say it is a burden.

Grandma No! is a physics-based game where you are given tasks to perform, and every action can have a calamitous or amusing outcome. If you ever felt that Murphy’s Law, had it in for you, Grandma has you beat.

The demo only covered one of the three available locations: the living room. The other two locations were the kitchen and the backyard. The living room had only three tasks to complete and other mini-tasks.

Grandma No! recommends you play with a controller, so I heeded the advice and found the experience easy and uncomplicated. Controlling Grandma around the three-dimensional cartoonish environment was smooth and never felt ridiculous as some physic-based games do.

The bright and colourful cartoon graphics add to the silly fun Grandma No! is all about.

The music is reminiscent of a sitcom from the 50s, but other music is available to play and is just as good. The small amount of voice acting I got was good, but it sounded like they used the same voice actor for different characters. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it is just something I picked up on. They might have been brothers if they had used different voice actors.

My brief time with Grandma No! was enjoyable and regrettably short. If Wallride and Super Rare Originals ask me for a follow-up review, I won’t say no. I look forward to what other tasks Grandma will get and how they will unfold devastatingly and hilariously.
