Which Way Up: Galaxy Games (Steam) – Review

Have you ever wanted to spend time with family or friends and play a fun and competitive game with multiple space Galaxy game modes and special celestial space spirits, all with unique models for each person to enjoy? Well, look no further. Welcome to Which Way Up: Galaxy Games, Developed and published by Turtle Flip Studio

Which Way Up: Galaxy Games is a game designed for people of all ages to get together and have a good time, with twelve great modes. Now, there is a single-player challenge mode that allows you to play through six maps, with each character having their own story/challenge mode. At this stage, only three characters are available, with more on the way.

Some modes include Event Horizon, in which players have to navigate and run away from a growing black hole with three lives to stay afloat until only one player is left, using gravity and your air punch to give you the upper hand.

Another is called Overload, a hot potato with a twist. One of the Space Sprites is charged with energy to the point of overloading. Still, you can save yourself by discharging the energy to another player, giving them an overload. This was a very fun mode and one of my most played modes.

Another great one is called Gastronomer, which is a really fun one. Your goal is to either eliminate all players as the Gastronomer by eating them or, as a normal player, attack the Gastronomer with bombs. You best be quick, as he will gobble you down before you can say BOMBS AWAY!

Controls are simple, but due to the game’s style of playing, the Which Way Up Space Olympics is only compatible with a controller. However, nicely enough, it is compatible with all controllers, so there is no need to freak out. Also, if needed, you can use a keyboard, which uses WASD for movement, Space for jumping, K for your force push ability, and arrow keys for navigating through the menus. A controller is the best use.

Steam remote play is the best way to play multiplayer, but be warned: It does need a stable internet connection. Otherwise, it becomes a jumbled mess with lag spikes and dropped frames. For the majority, the game felt smooth and fun to enjoy with some friends. You can also play local multiplayer by adding controllers to your computer/laptop and hooking it up to the TV for the whole family to enjoy.

The graphics were quite well done, with the work of a gravity engine used to simulate gravitation effects like being pulled into an orbit. Each mode brings amazing colour and visual effects, making each game mode/map special. Not to mention explosions from bombs or the tron-like trail following close behind, making each small detail make an amazing big picture.

The sound was quite good, with a peaceful background melody then switching up to a thrilling beat-blasting soundtrack that gets your blood pumping and helps you be the ultimate victor. Each aspect of the game, from jumping to smacking balls around to throwing bombs and listening to them explode, really adds to the overall environment and feel of the game.

Overall, I’m very happy with Which Way Up: Galaxy Games. It brings great enjoyment to family or close friends, making fun and competitive memories to laugh about later. I can see some great DLCs being added to this game to improve it even more. Even at the stage the game is at now, it’s still an amazing gaming experience. Let the competitive atmosphere bloom!
