Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending Perth Oz Comic-Con, held annually at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event brings together talented cosplayers, idols, artists, special guests, and exhibitors for two days, celebrating all things pop culture and the nerdy side of life.
My weekend started the same way I begin every convention weekend: with a walkthrough of the expo hall to check out all the fantastic exhibitors on display. Artists offered comic books, prints of your favourite characters, custom handmade bags and pins, and beautiful, one-of-a-kind dice. Whether you’re into TV and film, gaming, anime, or comics, there was something to suit every taste.
A few of my favourite vendors included ‘ilaikcake’, who created custom F1-themed stickers and mugs featuring iconic radio quotes, along with other fun sticker and keychain designs. Another standout was ‘Jam Drops Art’, who drove all the way from Brisbane and makes custom coasters with Pokémon cards encased in resin, I couldn’t resist picking one up featuring my favourite Pokémon, Gengar.
Wild North Comics was another highlight, showcasing the work of local Perth artists—one of whom even sold out their comic book over the weekend. Last but not least, Indigiverse made a strong impression with their incredible work spotlighting Indigenous artists, paired with a powerful motto: “The oldest living cultures inspiring the newest living heroes.”
When I needed a break, I’d head to the main stage to listen to guest panels. This year’s film and TV guests included David Wenham (Lord of the Rings, Van Helsing), Emilie De Ravin (Lost, Roswell), Georgina Haig (Once Upon A Time, Snowpiercer), and Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings, What Lies Beneath).
David Wenham was an absolute highlight. He shared behind-the-scenes stories from his time on the Lord of the Rings set, including pranks, what it was like working with the great Peter Jackson, and his experience portraying Faramir. Fans also had the opportunity to meet the guests and take photos with them throughout the weekend.
Between guest panels, cosplay competitions and parades took centre stage. Cosplay is essential to any convention, and 2025’s Perth Oz Comic-Con was no exception. I got to meet and chat with a number of passionate cosplayers who had poured blood, sweat, and tears into their costumes and props. To me, cosplayers are truly the heart and soul of events like this, and it was a pleasure to photograph and film them for MKAU Gaming.
Side stages offered everything from idol performances and trivia battles to workshops that gave attendees insight into breaking into the industry. The Just Dance stage was, as always, a hit, whether it was regular attendees or people dressed as a T-Rex or Dr. Eggman absolutely slaying Rasputin and Lady Gaga tracks.
Tabletop areas allowed groups of friends to relax and play some board games away from the hustle and bustle. Magic: The Gathering had an area set up teaching people how to play the insanely popular TCG. If I had a little more time, I would have loved to try it out and learn the game that I’ve always wanted to learn.
Tattoo booths even allowed people to mark the weekend permanently on their skin. I nearly crumbled under the pressure and got one myself—but, unfortunately, I ran out of time. For those looking to relax, the grassy area outside provided the perfect spot to sit in the glorious Perth weather and recharge.
Perth Oz Comic-Con had something for you no matter what you were into. The public came in droves to be part of what turned out to be an unforgettable weekend. Huge thanks to MKAU Gaming and Oz Comic-Con for the opportunity to attend. I’ve been to many conventions over the years, but this was my first in a media role – an experience that allowed me to grow my photography and videography skills, which means a lot to me. So, thank you again.
